What a moodboard is?

When we start a new project about graphic design and we are at the point where we need to organize and present ideas and concepts to clarify a little about the path to follow, it is very useful to create a moodboard, it is nothing more than a panel where we place graphically each of these ideas and see them all together to draw conclusions and references in a more effective way.

The use of moodboards is very practical for projects of all kinds, not only in the field of graphic design. Let’s discuss some cases where the use of this resource will be useful.

When should you use a moodboard?

We can use a moodboard as a personal resource, within our agency, we can see in a broader way the approach we are going to give to the project and filter the ideas to have a clearer path to follow. Once these ideas have been filtered, we keep the ones that best fit the initial concept and save them in a file to be used as a reference when we start working on the project.

We can also use it as a first presentation to our client so that he can see different approaches and select the one that best fits his idea, before going into more detail and save us hours of work.

Moodboards can be made physically, with paper cut-outs on a panel and discussed among the group members.

With the rise of new technologies moodboards can be moved to the digital terrain, speeding up their creation and dissemination. That’s why I want to show you, based on my own experience, some of the best tools to create moodboards on the Internet. Some of them are free and others are paid.

Go MoodBoard

Moodboard is a handy iPad app that helps you add photos from your photo library or the web, send your moodboards to Twitter and Facebook, or share them via email. You can also share editable moodboards using iTunes file sharing, and there is Retina support.

While it is a useful tool, it has a bit of a scrapbook style. You may want to judge whether to use a whiteboard, a PDF or an app, depending on the client and the medium that best suits them.

If the $9.99 / £6.99 price of this app doesn’t fit your pocket, you can try the free version, Moodboard Lite. It includes all the features of the main app, but you are limited to only one Moodboard.
